As I mentioned yesterday, the issue of government interference in the media in the United States shows no signs of being resolved. Of course, I don’t know what will happen in the future. Journalist Jen Ssaki, who I have thought has been quite outstanding since the Obama era for her political judgment and clear speaking style, spoke in an easy-to-understand manner on her talk show, saying, “There is a bigger background to what is happening now than Kimmel’s departure.” This was very helpful for me in understanding the implications of the issues directly affecting the American media. Disney Pulled Jimmy Kimmel as Pressure Built on Multiple Fronts For Robert A. Iger and his leadership team at Disney and ABC, time was running out./Jimmy Kimmel, one of the company’s biggest stars, was preparing to tape the Wednesday edition of his late-night show in Hollywood at 4:30 p.m. And he had written an opening monologue that would address a cascading political firestorm head-on./Conservatives had accused Mr. Kimmel of mischaracterizing the politics of the man accused of killing the right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission had just warned ABC of serious consequences, telling the network that “we can do this the easy or the hard way.” And a Texas-based owner of many ABC affiliates was preparing to pull Mr. Kimmel from its stations indefinitely./Mr. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, and Dana Walden, his head of television, were also hearing from skittish advertisers and employees who had begun to receive threatening messages. When the team reviewed Mr. Kimmel’s planned remarks, they grew concerned that his monologue would only inflame the situation further.(NEW YORK TIMES ・2025/09/18)

● Joseph Raymond McCarthy(1908―1957)= アメリカの政治家。

Watching American television shows, it seems as though many commentators and announcers are “trembling with fear.” Why? They are in the perplexed position of being in front of the camera, trembling at the tyranny of power that Trump and his allies might commit, yet having to broadcast the content of the issue. Will all television stations soon turn their “silent screens” into a spectacle? What about newspapers? America is experiencing a tornado even worse than the “McCarthy whirlwind(「赤狩り」)” of the past.(Y.S.)
